At approximately 8:00 p.m., Lynchburg Police responded to the Super 8 Motel on Candlers Mountain Road to serve an arrest warrant on 32-year-old Francisco J. Hernandez Jr., of Newport News. Hernandez barricaded himself inside his room with a hostage. After a 3 hour standoff Hernandez was shot by Lynchburg Police.

Twenty-five-year-old Ryheam Damon Brown was shot and killed by a Lynchburg Police officer off 17th Street on the night of February 3, 2023. He was transported to the hospital, where he died.

A civil lawsuit accuses Officers Michael Johnson Jr., Jonathan Farrar and Zachary Miller of excessive force. Police shot Steve Rucker Jr. with a stun gun while he was on a horse, and then hit him with a police car, the lawsuit alleges.

A civil rights complaint was filed against the City of Lynchburg, LPD Officer Robbin Miller, LPD Officer Seth Reed, and ex-LPD Officer Zachary Miller (whom the lawsuit states was/is employed by Amherst County Sheriff's Office as a deputy, but whom did not appear in rosters requested as of one month later) by Shanta Lynette Brown and Aquasha Sandidge on the 18th of September, 2023 for an incident that occurred on April 28, 2020 at 1503 Kemper Street. The complaint alleges excessive force, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution.

Larry Anthony Booker filed a court complaint against Lynchburg Police for assault. Luke Schartiger, Jonathan Bragg, and Nathan R. Godsie were named as the assailants.
